    Living Room Makeover

I am super excited to finally be sharing the first interiors related post since we bought our first home last December! We started renovations at the beginning of the year and I have been desperate to share some of the transformations we have completed ever since. At the bottom of the post I have included where everything is from and provided links where possible but some of the bits are old season now so no longer available online.

So first up is our living room makeover! I suppose we should start with a couple of ‘before’ photos…

This room is at the front of the house and has a huge window overlooking the front garden which lets in SO much light. When we bought the house it was an open plan living room / dining room. We knew straight away that we wanted to change the layout of the downstairs to make the space work better for our family. So we have put up a wall to separate the living room off and we then knocked down the wall between what was the dining area and kitchen to make it one big open plan room. I am so glad we did this as I really think it maximises the space and I personally love having a separate living room. It’s much more cosy!

As well as putting up the wall we also ripped down the old tiled ceilings throughout the downstairs and replaced them with lovely smooth plastered ones. We then painted most of the walls in the living room powder grey apart from our feature navy wall which is in the shade admiral. All of the paint we have used in the house has been from Wickes’ own brand and the quality has been fantastic!

We haven’t got around to changing the carpet yet so I think that’ll be a job for the new year. I’d like to change it to laminate to match the rest of the downstairs and get a large rug but Josh is quite keen to keep carpet in the living area. I’m also still on the hunt for the perfect pair of navy curtains. I bought some when we first decorated but once I hung them I realised they were the wrong shade of navy so quickly took them down and returned them.

We spent a lot of time contemplating what to do with the fireplace in this room. As it is no longer central we even considered pulling the whole thing out. But in the end to save costs, we decided to just freshen it up with a lick of white paint and then Josh made a deeper top for it too. We may change it properly at some point in the future but for now i’m really pleased with how it’s turned out.

In our living room at our old house we had quite a few copper bits and pieces so we decided to stick with that theme in this house too. I think the copper accents compliment the navy really well and they break up the grey theme that runs throughout the whole house too.

Our old sofas sadly didn’t work in this room at all as they were just too large. So we sold them and have bought a corner sofa and armchair instead. I’d never considered a corner sofa before but when we went to Center Parcs last Christmas there was one in our lodge and we both said how nice it was to be able to sit together and both have space to put your feet up! So when we realised we needed to buy new, it was a no brainer to get a corner suite this time.

The TV is mounted on the wall just like we had before and we have a lovely solid wood sideboard that we inherited from Josh’s parents which sits nicely underneath. Our DVD player and sky box sit on top of it and all of our DVDs fit perfectly into the cupboards too. I haven’t shown this in the photos as I am planning on giving it a new lease of life with a fresh coat of paint and some new handles very soon.

The final finishing touches to this room are definitely the beautiful pair of copper frames from Desenio. It took us forever to decide what to put on this bit of wall behind the arm chair. Once we had decided we wanted some prints we then spent a whole evening looking at all the amazing posters that Desenio has to offer. I’m pretty sure we looked at every single one! There was so many we loved but we were really struggling to agree on two together so in the end we chose a set from the ‘perfect pair’ section. I am so pleased with them, the quality is amazing and I really think these posters complete the room!

    Our Spare Bedroom Makeover

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to be finally sharing our spare bedroom makeover on my blog. I’ve been itching to get stuck into this project for months and it feels so good to say that it is finally done (well, almost.. there is still a picture rail to be fitted and we need to buy a desk chair but that’s it!!) We are super pleased with how this room has turned out. It took a lot of long evenings spent painting to cover over the ghastly layers of bright paint (I’ve included a couple of awful before photos below!) but it was totally worth it as we now have a beautiful guest bedroom and office space that we are already loving using.

If you read my spare bedroom inspiration post a couple of months back then you’ll remember that I said we would be going for a grey and yellow colour scheme in this room… WELL… turns out that I loved those colours so much after buying some bits and pieces that I used them in our own bedroom instead! Oops. So it was back to the drawing board again! I knew that I wanted the room to have a really light and airy feel to it so I’d always had my heart set on painting the walls white, much to my husbands annoyance! Ha. I also really wanted to have simple white bedding too and bring in some pops of colour through some different accessories.

I then stumbled upon this gorgeous pastel striped throw* from Wayfair and just fell in love with it so I used that as my main colour scheme inspiration for the rest of the room along with some really subtle copper accents.

Furniture wise we actually already had the bed frame as we recently got a new one and Josh very cleverly built the smaller drawers himself using pieces from an old desk. The larger chest of drawers once belonged to Josh’s grandparents but we up cycled them by giving them a fresh lick of paint and changing the knobs. I was desperate to paint them in a pretty pastel hue but Josh really wasn’t keen on the idea sadly. The desk is the only new piece of furniture in the room and even that was a complete bargain! It looks a bit bare at the moment so I’m on the hunt for some matching desk accessories and we still need to get a chair which will then complete our little work space.

I’m so pleased with our new space and it definitely looks just as good as I imagined in my head, if not better! I can’t wait to host our first guests in our new spare room at the end of the month. I’ll let the photos do the rest of the talking and I have tried my hardest to link all the items used for anyone who might be interested. I hope you love it as much as we do!

    Spare Bedroom Inspiration

We moved into our house almost 18 months ago and I’ve very ashamed to admit that our third bedroom, which is in fact the biggest, has never been properly used! It’s full of various pieces of furniture, some of which needs up cycling, other bits need to go to the tip, all our paperwork is organised into a set of drawers and then of course there is plenty of general junk that we just keep putting off dealing with! Well I have finally decided that enough is enough and I am desperate to get started on sorting it out so that we can decorate and turn it from dumping ground into a lovely tranquil spare bedroom / office space.

Josh often works into the early hours on his laptop at home, normally on the sofa which really isn’t ideal so we’re planning on having a proper desk set up as well as a double bed so that he can work more efficiently. It will also be handy for me to be able to use this work space for Blogging too.

I have changed my mind countless times about the colour scheme and lay out of this room and I’m sure once we get started I’ll no doubt change my mind again but I thought I would share our plans and a few of the things I’m lusting over at the moment for this new space.

The plan (at the moment) is to paint the whole room white so that it looks nice and bright and then to use touches of grey and yellow as accent colours. I absolute adore mustard yellow and we actually painted a feature wall in our downstairs hallway mustard last year but sadly the very overpriced paint was rubbish and even after countless coats it just didn’t cover properly which was a shame so we have since wallpapered over it.

I’m a massive fan of the Old English print company and we already have a couple of their prints around the house so I’ll definitely be adding at least one to the spare room although there is so many lovely ones I may have to order a couple 😉  I’m also in love with that yellow bedding! It’s so bright and fun, I think it will be perfect for the warmer months and then I would probably switch to a grey bed set for the cooler months.

Furniture wise there will be a double sliding mirror door wardrobe which we keep over flow clothes in, our old white metal bedstead, a desk with drawers for our files which we will be up cycling by painting it with either white or grey chalk paint and changing the drawer knobs and lastly a desk chair. I want to keep the room quite simple and understated, less is more as they say!

I would also love to get a decent blind for this room as all the windows in our house are very large and as this window is at the front of the house it can feel like you are being overlooked sometimes by the neighbours opposite. I really love the look of the VELUX Blinds and there are so many different colours and designs to choose from. Although knowing me, I’ll probably just stick with white and maybe get some slightly more exciting  curtains to dress the window too. Once the room is complete I’ll do a separate post with some before and after shots!
